Everyone remembers their first base Skyrim act run. That charming moment where you realized you didn ’ t have to follow Bethesda ’ mho railroad tracks. True Skyrim international relations and security network ’ thymine about fulfilling your Dragonboring destiny of long cart rides and chatting with lame dragons. It ’ randomness about roleplaying a minimum-wage Whiterun guard on gate duty before returning to her spouse and adopted children. A fast-talking Khajit merchant competing with devilish Ri ’ saad. A Riverwood woodcutter splitting log for Gerdur by day and drink ale at the Sleeping Giant by nox. Who needs to fight Alduin when you can play The Sims : Skyrim version ? Because as much fun as it is to learn the Thuum and Save The World©, it ’ sulfur never quite a much fun as furnishing your Breezehome bedroom or elk-hunting in Falkreath afforest. And that ’ s just vanilla Skyrim. The bright ( read : twisted ) minds at Nexus Mods let you live every view of your Skyrim concentration fantasy, whether freezing to death, rebuilding a run-down farm one stone at a time, working manual tug, or researching new spells in real-time hours. Hmm… possibly roleplaying in Skyrim is less fun than we ’ ve flim-flam ourselves into think .

The Ultimate Skyrim modpack
Like most of my Skyrim roleplaying runs, my approaching playthrough will be based around the Ultimate Skyrim sum conversion modpack. If Skyrim ’ s modding community transformed the game from bare hit to roleplaying caption, the Ultimate Skyrim modpack turned that up to 11. Described as “ the ultimate fantasy life simulator, ” Dylan Perry ’ sulfur ( once Belmont Boy ’ second ) Ultimate Skyrim pre-packages hundreds of mods into the most immersive and challenging RPG world I ’ vitamin d ever experienced. I was familiar with many of its individual mods, but never played them in one integrated, about entirely bug- and crash-free human body. survival submersion courtesy of Frostfall, Hunterborn, iNeed, etc. ? Get ready to pack your furs and hunting knife. Deadlier battle and total pass via Requiem ? Don ’ deoxythymidine monophosphate expect to fight anything scarier than mudcrabs until you ’ re about level 4. Between crafting recipes, tavern games, expanded questlines, daily in-game journaling, and bathing trips to the Riverwood current, Ultimate Skyrim wholly redefines the illusion roleplaying feel .
If you ’ re companion with Ultimate Skyrim ( UltSky ), you already know most of its mods. If not, you ’ re missing out and need to download it right field off : splurge on that one month of Nexus Premium for an easier Wabbajack facility. UltSky features harder fight, a more candid worldly concern, and more immersive gameplay that allows your character to very live in Skyrim. here are some resources to learn more about the modpack :
- Ultimate Skyrim: Getting Started Guide
Everything you need to know about UltSky’s core mods and gameplay experience. The talented UltSky community leaders have done a great job summarizing this information so you can see what sets UltSky apart from the vanilla game. The biggest mods are Skyrim Unbound, which unplugs your character from the main questline, the survival mods, and of course, Requiem. - Requiem: The Roleplaying Overhaul
Ogerboss’s legendary mod totally changes everything about Skyrim. It redefines basic gameplay mechanics around combat, spells, and even movement. It adds new NPCs and modifies the game environment. And most jarringly for Skyrim veterans, it de-levels the world so threats don’t scale up with the player.
There are room excessively many mods in UltSky to highlight them all, so I recommend you check out that Getting Started Guide for more details. You can besides check out the entire UltSky modlist if you truly want to peek behind the curtain .
Anna’s UltSky MCM tweaks
I make a few tweaks to the base UltSky MCM guide for most playthroughs. These are minor changes to increase submersion or address a few UltSky oddities. When you ’ re following the Google doctor, you can make these changes when the MCM template would normally set up the respective mod, or you can tweak mise en scene mid-playthrough .
- A Matter of Time
- “General” sub-menu, select “Words” for your “In-Game Clock” and “Clock Type.”
- “Display” sub-menu, set the horizontal offset for your in-game clock to 5, vertical offset to 0.
- Skyrim adventurers don’t have watches in-game, but do generally know the time of day. Seeing “Mid afternoon” instead of “3:23 PM” really makes you feel like you’re living in a pre-modern world while also reminding you the day is passing. If you absolutely need to see the time, you still can via the wait menu or tab menu if needed.
- Complete Crafting
- “Mining and Materials” sub-menu increase “Firewood per chop” to 10 and “Max per activation” to 100.
- Change “Mining Presets” to “Use Custom Settings.” Change the next four numbers to 3, 3, 1, and 24.
- These tweaks let you actually work a boring mining or woodcutting job, which is perfect for a low-level character just starting their journey. Don’t forget to wait a few hours to simulate how long it takes to mine ore/split wood. For mining, try one piece of ore per hour. For splitting, try 100 pieces of firewood per hour (about a cord of wood split and stacked per 6-7 hour day)
- Dungeon Darkness
- “Basic Config” sub-menu, uncheck “Do fadeout on dungeon entry.”
- I’d rather see lights flicker/fade out when I enter a new cell than have 20 seconds of blindness where spiders and vampires eat me.
- Easy Wheel Menu
- I generally don’t bind any option to the wheel that doesn’t have an accessible hotkey. My wheel 1 is a mix of follower and horse options. Wheel 2 is just Treat Wounds and Refill/Drink. This saves a little time on MCM setup and you can bind other powers later.
- Nether’s Follower Framework ( added 03/07/2021 )
- “Gameplay” sub-menu, uncheck “Protected Followers.”
- “Interaction” sub-menu, check “Expendable Recruits.”
- Major shoutout to Ronald in the UltSky Discord for teaching me about these MCM functions. I planned to use console commands to get fellow Stormcloak recruits to join Jastinia on her missions, but now I can do it cleanly through the mod. I’m disabling follower protection to simulate the natural dangers of war, but might reenable it in certain quests so things don’t break.
- Immersive HUD ( update 03/07/2021 )
- “Activation” sub-menu, uncheck “Active effects always on” plus all options under the “Crosshair Activation” subsection.
- “Options” sub-menu, check “Force crosshair to hide” and uncheck “ Enemy health index enabled. ”
- “Transparencies” sub-menu, set Magicka, Health, and Stamina to 0
- If my characters don’t have watches, they definitely don’t have Google Glass HUDs either. I disable these settings on all playthroughs for a super clean HUD where you can only see the general time of day, your iNeed levels, and sometimes your Frostfall status. To fully hide your crosshair and bars, continue in the next step.
- Less Intrusive HUD
- “HUD Visibility” sub-menu, uncheck both “Show Alternate Crosshair” and “Show Alternate Sneak Crosshair.” Under “Compass Markers” uncheck “Show Undiscovered Locations.”
- Under the “HUD Items Opacity” area, set the following bar opacities to 0: Magicka, Health, Stamina, Enchantment, Separator. Set Item/NPC Name and Item Info Text to 30.
- HUD transformation complete! No more intrusive bars floating on your pristine roleplaying screen. Get good at manually aiming with bows/crossbows and pay attention to your heart and breathing to get clues about your health/stamina in combat.
- Frostfall
- Set “Exposure Rate” to .6
- Change the death setting to “Rescue” only if you are in a populated area, like the main road outside of Dawnstar or the Windhelm bridge after the guards don’t let you in. Don’t cheat and pretend that the Pale coastline near The Brinehammer is populated.
- Skyrim looks a lot colder than the base .3 exposure suggests. I’ve found .6 really captures the danger of Skyrim’s weather without being totally unplayable.
- Requiem
- “Skills and Perks,” set “Skillrate Factor” to 75%.
- “Atmosphere,” set “Heartbeat threshold” to 30% and “Killmove health threshold” to 15%.
- A slower skillrate slows down the game enough for a longer playthrough, but not so much that you can’t level up at all (50% is overkill). Sweet killmoves makes combat feel more satisfying, especially in prolonged boss fights. You can set player killmove immunity in Ultimate Combat to avoid random killmove deaths. Finally, 30% heartbeat threshold is a reliable warning after you’ve disabled the health HUD.
- Skyrim Souls (not via MCM)
- Edit the SkyrimSouls.ini text file in C:\UltSky\content\mods\UltSky 4.0.7 Core Files\SKSE\Plugins. Change everything but “Console” to “=1” so nothing pauses the game.
- You can’t pause in real life so you shouldn’t be able to pause in Skyrim either. It’s not like we’re playing a game or something… If you want to tone this down, I’d at least unpause the Favorites menu so you can’t timestop combat to grab a potion. I still allow the console to pause the game so I have a last resort for catching my breath as a sabercat jumps me fixing bugs.
- ENB settings (not via MCM)
- Shift+Enter in-game to open the ENB configuration. Under “enbseries.ini” activate “EnableDepthOfField.”
- Small graphical upgrade to increase scouting, combat, and exploration immersion.
Anna’s added mods
I love the infrastructure UltSky have, but like most other Skyrim addicts, I besides can ’ triiodothyronine period modding. Just one more ESP and I swear I ’ megabyte done ! You ’ five hundred think Requiem plus all the immersion/survival mods would be challenging enough… unless you ’ re a true roleplaying masochist like me. Between technical adjustments, hemipterous insect fixes, and excess features, I ’ ve added about 50 supernumerary mods to the game for most of my playthrough. I know a lot of folks in the Discord groove add even more. Don’t just install new UltSky mods without reading the customization instructions! There are lots of other steps beyond dragging and dropping plugins ; you will break your game if you don ’ metric ton follow them. But once you ’ re conversant with Reqtificator, cargo orders, and the constancy quiz, mod away !
( Modwatch lode orderliness : it ’ south by and large stable. “ Mostly. ” For more tips on load order, and other great mods that I decidedly stole, check out BMX ’ s indispensable Enhancement Guide, the UltSky # customization channel, and never, ever use LOOT. )

COMBAT
- Death Alternative – Your Money or Your Life (plus Captured): warning – may break your game! But if it doesn’t, and I’m not planning to die enough to risk it, this is a fabulous alternative to a true Dead is Dead playstyle. Sometimes you just mess up or get caught which is game-over in DiD but a fun roleplaying opportunity with Death Alternative. You can still permanently die in Death Alternative if you don’t find safety too. Spoilers: the Thalmor captured scenario is also going to be a major plot-point for my upcoming character’s development.
- Ultimate Combat: One of my favorite combat additions to any modlist, and it even plays nicely with UltSky and Requiem. Bonus for the cool swing animation. Disable the awful headshot notifications and change the damage mult to 1.5.
- Wildcat (plus patch): Fast-paced combat addition that works nicely with UC. Stacking Wildcat injuries on top of Wounds can feel redundant, but it’s great to inflict them on enemies in battle (Wounds doesn’t allow that). I let UC handle my timed blocks and disable it in Wildcat.
- Wounds: For the truly self-loathing roleplayer. Requiem combat isn’t scary enough without some long-term battle-wound consequences. That’s why I spend about 1/3 of my playthroughs recovering from random injuries in inns and tents; talk about peak roleplayed Skyrim fun. Tweak the MCM settings so bones take the longest to heal (5 day base) followed by concussions (2), cuts (1.2), and bruises (.8). You can also add Wounds Overlay to show your fresh wounds and old scars via race menu.
- Sneak Tools: Between the disguising cowl, trickshot arrows, and the ability to slit throats or knock enemies out, this mod totally transforms stealthy gameplay. Knockouts are particularly exciting because it gives you alternatives to murder-hoboing across the province. You can even knock someone out mid-combat: power attack while they are blocking, stagger them, run behind them, switch to fists, and then sneak/punch. I allow essential kills with this via the MCM. Note: If used with Wildcat, consider tweaking attack of opportunity values via TES5edit.exe to match those in this Wildcat special edition patch, or you’ll explode anyone you try to knock out.
- Dragon Combat Overhaul: Requiem/UltSky dragon combat is already insane, but DCO takes that to the next level. Your UltSky character might not fight dragons for a while, if ever, but it needs to be even more epic when they do.
- Apocalypse – Magic of Skyrim (plus patch): Powerful and visually stunning new magic. Essential for mages but still fun for warriors; you might not use the spells but battling against them is a (literal) blast.
- TK Hitstop: Adds a little more impact to your strikes so it really feels like you are hitting something. I’m currently using .04 for the hitstop mini-pause but can never decide what I like most between .04 and .08. I also set blur/shake to 1 second for both enemies and objects.
- Enhanced Blood Textures: Vanilla Skyrim combat just doesn’t capture the gruesome reality of medieval warfare with 20 pound swords. EBT definitely does. I haven’t had significant script problems with this yet, but you can tweak the MCM settings to increase performance and reduce script load.
WORLDBUILDING
IMMERSION
- Immersive Music: ( added 03/07/2021 ) Jeremy Soule’s 3.5 hour soundtrack is a masterpiece but it’s just too short. I got tired of Spotify stealing CPU in the background so I’ve added the amazing Immersive Music mod instead. Pretty sure about two-thirds of these songs were on my Skyrim playlist anyway. Adding ESPs mid-playthrough always has some risk, but with no scripts and it should be fine.
- Skyrim Reputation: A total overhaul to social interactions. People will know you and remember your deeds, and it will affect interactions with everyone from tavern-goers to merchants. This helps Skyrim feel more lived-in, especially between different holds. It makes no sense that you can be a Forsworn terrorist in Imperial-aligned Markarth and suffer zero consequences once you walk across the bridge into Skyrim’s Imperial capital of Solitude.
- Real Names: One of the lightest but also most impactful mods you can add to the game. Nothing breaks roleplay immersion like talking with “Windhelm Guard” or “Suspicious Laborer,” and Real Names solves that problem by assigning lore-friendly names to all generic NPCs. Combined with Immersive Speechcraft, you can also talk to everyone and form great roleplay connections with random people you’d otherwise never notice. Toggle the “Exclude corpses” option in the MCM so you don’t have to invent reasons about why you know the names of the bandits you just killed; they don’t all have nametags on their clothes!
- Wintersun – Faiths of Skyrim (see install guide and patches): Requiem gods are totally unforgiving of crime while also not always providing major benefits. Wintersun gives you a diverse, race-based pantheon to worship from at the start of the game, and the ability to change over time as you come across new shrines. Also, two words: Daedra worship. You can check out Immersive Divine Blessings if Wintersun can feel a little too powerful.
- Go To Bed: Simple animation mod so your character will sit/lie in bed to get some quality sleepy time. Particularly great if you take screenshots. At installation, I chose the varied animation package.
- Alternate Conversation Camera LE: Shifts the first-person conversation camera to a configurable, over-the-shoulder camera. This matches a lot of other roleplaying game cameras and is great for first-person gamers who wants to see their own character more.
- Immersive Speechcraft: Another roleplay must-have, Immersive Speechcraft lets you have basic conversations and make speechcraft skilltree-related requests of virtually any sentient NPC. You can peddle stolen goods to beggars and criminals, get random training in skills from smiths and retired adventurers, ask for help in the middle of a fight, or trick someone into checking their bootlaces before you pick their pocket. You can even use them as a limited follower!
- Immersive Fallen Trees: Adds tree bridges and downed trunks across the landscape. Great when you need to cross large stretches of rivers like the Karth, plus creates exciting tactical situations.
- Jaxonz Renamer: Allows you to rename basically anything in the game. This is perfect once you settle down in a home, or if you want to add titles/ranks/”flair” to NPCs in the game.
- Suspicious City Guards: Ever wonder why Skyrim’s blind guards don’t care when you creep around town with a dagger in hand in the broad daylight? The creator(s) of Suspicious Guards did, so they increased AI detection on soldiers across Skyrim. They will now follow shady adventurers who openly sneak around town or brandish weapons.
- Enchanted Arsenal: Visual enhancement for the lazy magic weapon shaders/colors in vanilla Skyrim. Pretty snowflakes and fire!
FIXES / TWEAKS
- Basically everything in the year-old PeonTheGrate Reddit guide. Pick and choose what you want; I recommend most that don’t have .ESPs, especially the barking dog fix.
- Phintweaks, especially armor: not having the right resistances is literally lethal.
- Knockdown changes if you want to limit the devastation of a Requiem knockdown. Makes sense on big characters; less so on small ones.
I ’ meter lone approximately 89 % certain ( plus-minus ) all of these are stable alongside basal UltSky, specially some of the heavier ones like Death Alternative. My final few playthroughs didn ’ t have big issues with them, so I ’ molarity going to live on the wild side and see how many crashes, freezes, and hangups my adjacent character can survive. Fingers crossed ? disavowal : please don ’ metric ton receive delirious at me if you install these mods and they are crashapaloozas ! After all, CTDs are separate of the complete mod addiction package .
Play time!
deoxyadenosine monophosphate much as I want to add about 10 ( 100 ) more mods to my list, it ’ randomness probably time to start my second base favorite part of Skyrim after modding : actually playing the game. I hope this first position inspired you to download Ultimate Skyrim, try out a few new mods, or otherwise adjust your own Skyrim experience. Please let me know if I missed out on a mod I absolutely must add. Join me following clock time when I introduce Jastinia of Windhelm, Imperial urchin turned Stormcloak as she tries to prove herself to the city that never accepted her. Thanks for read !
