On a airfoil flush, the inspirations for Phantaruk are immediately apparent. There ’ randomness very clearly captive to recreate the tension of Alien : isolation, paired with some shameless crib of the themes and delivery of SOMA. And while that ’ s not necessarily a bad thing, I would argue that fake, adverse to cliché adages, is not a peculiarly sincere form of flattery ; at least not in this case. The real problem is that between the game ’ s one-dimensionality, lack of personal identity, use of trundle and mutate enemies, bumbling fib delivery, and brief overall length, Phantaruk fails to distinguish itself, from a gameplay point of view at least, in any meaningful way from its contemporaries.
Lacking in distinguishable identity international relations and security network ’ thyroxine such a great party foul if it ’ s at least accompanied by a rich ( or at least engrossing ) story, but the most concern narrative that Phantaruk delivers is through its in-game history. not its portray narrative, to be clear ; but preferably, its references to past events that aren ’ thyroxine actually experienced by the actor. even the game ’ second appoint, Phantaruk, is borrowed from the mention of the game ’ s new-age God, a re-envisioning of Set that emerged from within a egyptian quarantine colony created to contain a smallpox outbreak. That finical outbreak was finally creditworthy for three billion deaths on Earth. The fad of Phantaruk viewed it as judgment of the wicked, as ordained by The First One ( an alluded patient zero for the outbreak ) within the Djara quarantine zone in Egypt. By burn they would be judged and cleansed, the cult said, a prophecy that came to be fulfilled by the sunburn of infect bodies. meanwhile, the natural resistance of some infected allowed newly recruits to the cult to act as Typhoid Marys, well serving as vectors to spread the disease .

unfortunately, this is all a much more interest report than the one that ’ s distinguish aboard Purity-02, the research and cloning vessel that serves as Phantaruk ’ s setting. Run by the H+ organization ( a less-than-subtle reference to the nature of their work in transhumanism ), which is accused of ties with the Phantaruk fad, the station has suffered a major disease outbreak of nameless lineage. sadly, beyond the allude ties to the cult, and the bumbling and apocalyptic audio logs left by the ship ’ sulfur captain, there ’ s short that ’ s ever actually explained. The wholly experience is a bit of a chat up of “ wake up and realize you ’ re a ringer ”, “ detect audio logs from captain ”, “ avoid enemies like SOMA ”, “ crawl through vents like Deus Ex ”, and “ stop event like every outbreak diagram always ”. The real causal agent of that outbreak, its repercussions, the electric potential of it being a planned experiment, the electric potential for other such incidents, its relation to the events back on earth, the nature of the crazy stuff growing in the ship, the relationship between the giant insects and the virus, or the report and destiny of Purity-01, none of it is always explained. so many scheme elements are introduced, but never developed., alternatively, our interest is squelched by lump-sum dumps of second-hand information through audio logs and the fact that all ascertainable items in the game are handily highlighted for the player.
It ’ s a substantial calamity, if I ’ megabyte honest, because there truly IS excellent fib in the game ; it ’ randomness equitable never fleshed out or properly explored. And while I would so much love to read about or play through those early stories, Phantaruk ’ s core loop of “ don ’ thyroxine get spotted > > The conclusion ” just international relations and security network ’ thyroxine resonating with me. certain, there are some amuse references in the shape of a mutate genius with appendages that looks an frightful set like a headcrab, and there ’ s a beautiful Sunshine moment towards the end of the bet on, but they ’ re not adequate to excuse an otherwise underwhelming crawl through a relatively lifeless transport. Particularly one that manages to be about too-brightly literature at all times thanks to the aggressive efflorescence from all the high-tech-y lights on everything, which subsequently manages to eliminate about all appreciable darkness, while simultaneously washing out any actual definition from what small is left.
Phantaruk ’ second gameplay besides leaves a distribute to be desired. Enemies don ’ t endanger to discover you – rather they are either “ aggressive ” or “ not ”, sometimes lurking without warning on the opposite side of a door as you open it, waiting to awkwardly swipe at the actor and force a re-load. With the game having these sorts of issues and a vaguely-exploratory narrative persistent good over two hours, I ’ vitamin d be lying if I said I was affect. But I ’ five hundred besides be lying if I said I would rather pay the $ 10 or indeed for the pair hours to be had in Phantaruk on a movie ticket alternatively. The alone true let down in all this is that the epic poem tales of judgment day cults and corporate engagement in human testing are completely sidelined in privilege of a cliché and histrionic mime about ending a small-scale mishap.
here ’ second hoping that Polyslash gets another pungency at the apple to bring us the early, now that they ’ ve given us the latter .
